Happy November… I mean Movember everyone!

Movember (the month formerly known as November) is a moustache growing charity event held during November that raises funds and awareness for prostate cancer. As a tribute to this momentous month of manly mayhem and since my upper lip is sprouting prickly, black, cancer-fighting allies, I’ve decided to create an entire blog to the growth, style, people, and design behind moustaches.

As a side note, and before I get into the meat of this blog, I’d like to direct everyone to the donations page for my team The Head HonchMo’s. This week I couldn’t bring myself to write another design blog, especially after finding one of the internet’s most effective time-waster websites. The website is www.oddee.com, a website that features interesting but useless information on any and every subject. Oddee generates over 5 million views a month and it’s no secret why (insert “it’s more addictive than…” analogy here).

So in an effort to time-burgle from your employers, I’ve put together a list of “Things That Are Awsome”. This list includes epic Facebook fails, inappropriate newspaper headlines, weird candy and everything in between. Anyway it has been awhile since I last posted anything so I hope you enjoy. Band logos, much like band posters, are cut from a different cloth than traditional branding. The logos are usually designed by amateur graphic designers giving them a raw, artistic, non-traditional style and feel.

Two Up and Coming Photographers

One thing I am very passionate about is supporting and promoting young talent. Being 24 myself, I can related to the hardships experienced in the professional world by young artists trying to make a name for themselves. However, I feel young people still have the spark, the creativity, and the drive to create some of the world’s most exciting work.

This week I’ve decided to feature two photographers who drip talent from their pours and blow their noses with awesomeness. Whether their backdrops are grungy beaten-up houses or vomit stained floors of an indie rock club, these two have the ability to capture images that would make even the most seasoned pros gush.

Cody Wheeler

Cody Wheeler is currently completing a Bachelor of Applied Arts degree in Medicine Hat. A relatively new photographer, Wheeler has only have been shooting for about a year.

“I get a lot of inspiration from music videos from the 90s. On the flip-side of that, I also get a lot of inspiration from classic cinema. I am just really passionate about photography, and if I’m not doing it, I’m reading about it, or looking at it.”

Keith Skrastins

Keith Skrastins is a man that’s not afraid to get his hands dirty. He has been roaming indie rock night clubs for years, armed only with his camera and a half empty pack of cigarettes.

A self-taught photographer, Skrastins has become one of the most influential pieces of the Calgary indie rock scene. He has shot some of Calgary’s most prolific bands including: The Lions, The Nix Dicksons, Frankie McQueen, Noel Johnson, Matt Blais, Black Phoenix Orchestra, and many, many more.

Patrick Bateman Business Card Scene

This is a scene from the 2000 film American Psycho directed by Mary Harron. In this scene Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) and his group of 80′s Wall Street cronies discuss their businesses cards with remarks like, Egg Shell White, Bone, and Off-White colouring.

For anyone who hasn’t seen the film, Bateman is a delusional, psychopath that hates being beaten at anything. I thought I liked my business card designs but these guys are nuts.

Look at that subtle off-white colouring.
The tasteful thickness of it.
Oh my God, it even has a watermark.

Top 10 Professional Sports Logos (By Sport)

People love professional sports and why not, they come in every flavour, they are a great way to socialize with your friends, and they are competitive (“you play to win the game”). As a graphic designer I really love the logos and emblems that fans proudly wear on jerseys, hats, bags, etc. Some of the worlds most widely recognized brands are ones dawned by professional athletes; that’s pretty cool.

Ask any designer and they will tell you that logos are one of the most difficult things to design. The success of a brand is hanging on one little icon and a few lines of typography. That’s pretty powerful.

Sugarpine:

Unfortunately, I don’t have any information about this image, except for the title Sugarpine. This is one of my favourite images for obvious reasons, the Milky Way Galaxy is stunningly visible due to a long exposure by the photographer. It is possible that this image has been digitally manipulated but it is impossible to be certain.

The Pale Blue Dot:

The Pale Blue Dot is a photograph of Earth taken in 1990 by Voyager 1 from a record distance of 6.1 billion kilometres (3.7 billion miles). The image illustrates the insignificance of Earth against the overwhelming vastness of space.

Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein Castle is a 19th-century Romanesque Revival palace on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany.

Man On The Moon

This is one of the most icon images of all tme, Buzz Aldrin poses on the Moon as Neil Armstrong captures his own reflection in the visor.

Sharkwater

This image was taken by Rob Stewart, director of Sharkwater, a documentary about the declining population of shark populations all over the world. The message behind the film is very somber but the imagery is breath taking.

Digital Blasphemy

This image was created by Ryan Bliss of Digital Blasphemy. Digital Blasphemy offers some of the most stunning desktop backgrounds you can find online. This particular image graced my desktop for almost two years while I was a student at the Lethbridge College.

Child & Vulture

This is the most disturbing photo in my list, however, it is extremely powerful. The small staving child is slowly crawling towards a feeding centre as the vulture patiently waits for her to die. The photographer Kevin Carter snapped this photo in 1993 in Sudan. The experience had a severe impact on Carter, and three months after this photo was taken he committed suicide.

Earthrise

A photograph of the Earth taken by astronaut William Anders in 1968 during the Apollo 8 mission. It has been called “the most influential environmental photograph ever taken.

Guerrillero Heroico

Guerrillero Heroico is an iconic photo of Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara taken by Alberto Korda on March 5, 1960, in Havana, Cuba. It is the most reprinted image in the history of photography. Interestingly, Alberto Korda claimed no payment for his picture. A modified version of the portrait through the decades was also reproduced on a range of different media, though Korda never asked for royalties.

Hubble Deep Field

The Hubble Deep Field is an image of a small region in the constellation Ursa Major, constructed from a series of observations by the Hubble Space Telescope. What is interesting about this photograph is that the area was thought to be empty but after a ten day exposure this image appeared. The HDF displayed over 10,000 points of light, each point being an entire galaxy containing billion of stars.

The Clash – London Calling

The photograph of Paul Simonon smashing his Fender Precision Bass at The Palladium in New York City on 21 September 1979 is one of the most icon images in rock and roll. Pennie Smith, who photographed the band for the album, originally did not want the photograph to be used. She thought that it was too out of focus, but Strummer and graphic designer Ray Lowry thought it would make a good album cover. In 2002, Smith’s photograph was named the best rock and roll photograph of all time by Q magazine^.

20 Excellent Law Firm Websites

2010 Winter Olympics Medals

The 2010 Winter Olympic games officially open tomorrow night and Canadians are hungry for gold.

The Olympic medals, designed by Omar Arbel and Corrine Hunt, are stunning. The unique undulating surfaces are representative of the rolling landscape of the greater Vancouver area while the laser engraved west coast aboriginal artwork is a tribute to Canadian culture.

The design of the medals went through a number of phases, starting out as a locket, but eventually landing on the extraordinary design we now see. Below are a few preliminary designs on the medals and the final versions. Enjoy!

Star Wars and Star Treck fans rejoice, the Graphics Lab 360 Light Display offers a synergy between our favourite science fiction movies and the real world.

This neat little contraption creates real life holograms… well kind of. The 360 light display projects high speed video onto a quickly spinning mirror, reflecting an accurate 360 image to each potential viewer.

This is the fifth rendition of my lead that I have written, reread, then quickly deleted. So I’ve decided to give it to you straight, Zombieland is the coolest movie of all time! Enough said.

Anyone who is zombie movie fanatic like myself will truly appreciate the cheesy gore, special effects and “zombie kills of the week.” However, Zombieland incorporates one feature all but ignored by the movie industry; dynamic, animated, absolutely kick-ass titles.

Below are a few screen shots from the film trailer (also in the film). Although it is impossible to do them justice in image-flats I figured it was still worth recommending.

Zombieland opened Friday, October 2 but I’m sure we’ll be hearing about it for years to come.
