Why Come To Calgary:

This is a little known fact but Toronto is not the only major city in Canada. Infact, Calgary, Alberta is home to one of the largest online marketing communities in the world. Our city of just over 1,000,000 hockey-loving, beer-drinking, cattle-rustling residents is also the home of Critical Mass (one of the largest web development companies in the world), Anduro Marketing (Co-developer of the SEO Browser), Media Dog (probably the most talented web design agency I’ve ever seen), and Calin Daniel Creative (my Calgary online marketing company “insert shameless plug here”).

Our city is awash in online marketing meet-ups, social networking breakfasts, and Digital Alberta events, however, the SEO community could use a kick start.

What the SEO MozCation Could Do For Calgary:

For anyone interested in promoting their small business online I think you will find this post valuable. For people who aren’t familiar with the term Search Engine Optimization (SEO) let me explain. SEO is the process of increasing a website’s visibility within major search engines. So for example a website that has utilized SEO effectively will rank higher within Google, causing it to display on say the first page of search results opposed to the 9th page. Many techniques go into a comprehensive SEO campaign such as:

- Link Building
- Social Networking
- Social Bookmarking
- On-site Optimization
- Article submissions
- Ect.

The list goes on and on. However, I am going to show you a practical example of how using a blog can greatly increase your SEO efforts.

The Blog Details:

One of my clients is Ace Custom Fabrication a Calgary welding company that specializing in oil field equipment fabrication. Over the last few months I have been working closely with them to build their search engine rankings using some of the techniques I described above. In the last two months, however, we have shifted our focus to article creation and syndication, which has had amazing results.

In February, 2011 we developed a blog titled Five Ways To Select A Calgary Welding Company. The blog is about 450 words in length and contains useful information for the average business owner looking to hiring a welding company. The blog is posted on the Ace Custom Fabrication website under the News section (the news page on a website is really a “blog” in disguise). And some clever content structuring has been used to make the blog more search engine friendly.

The Result:

In less than two weeks the blog post has gone from not ranking for the keyword phrase “Calgary Welding Companies” to ranking on the first page in Google. Not bad for less than two weeks of work.

How and Why It Was Successful

There are a few major contributing factors to this particular blog’s success.

WordPress:

For starters the website was built using WordPress which allows for key SEO characteristics. For anyone not familiar with WordPress it is an open source Content Management System (CMS) that allows the average person or business to manage a website. This includes adding images, content, blogs, photo galleries, ect.

Keywords and Writing Content:

Selecting the keywords is a step we completed at the beginning of the SEO process. We decided to target the phrase “Calgary Welding Companies” because it is a highly searched term and is also relevant to the content on our client’s website. Therefore the first step was to create a blog title that encapsulated these keywords.

The second step was to insert references to the keywords throughout the blog. This is often the biggest challenge because keyword stuffing can make a blog choppy and difficult to read. Plus stuffing keywords in a blog for SEO doesn’t work like it used to, today search engines are more finely tuned to identify when you are trying to outsmart them.

Title Tag:

The title tag is metadata that tells the Search Engines what your web page is about. WordPress auto-populates the title tag with the name of the blog making it extremely relevant to any search results relating to Calgary Welding Companies (remember our title was “Five Ways to Select A Calgary Welding Company”). That is why selecting a keyword rich title is extremely important to ranking for related keywords.

The URL

Once again it’s WordPress to the rescue. WordPress now grabs the title of the blog and creates a URL with the keywords. Now we have references to our keywords in the title, the URL, and the body content.

Article Syndication

Now that you have your amazing, keyword rich article posted on your website what do you do with it? Well now is the time to let the world know about your greatness. The web is literally littered with article directory websites which provide one way backlinks when you submit content. You’ll notice at the bottom of the article we inserted a few links back to our website. Although it may look as though we are simply inserting our contact information, the links we inserted have much greater value.

For starters the blogs will be published on the article directories, providing backlinks to the Ace website. Secondly, the web contains some unscrupulous webmasters referred to as scrappers. Scrappers basically steal content from one website and republish it on their own website in an attempt to rank for your keywords. Now in some cases this can be bad because it leads to duplicate content issues (a problem that forces Google to choose which article was created first, then attribute negative rankings to duplicate versions of the content) but in many cases, since we embedded a link in the article, we will now have a one way link pointed to our website. Awesomeness!

Conclusion:

So those are a few simple techniques that can be used to increase your business blog’s ranking. The positive effects of blogging, however, go far beyond just link building and search engine ranking. A blog can also help to position you, or your company as the authority on any given topic. This traditionally leads to free PR opportunities, media coverage, and more juicy links.

1. Logo

This is marketing 101; a business without a logo is like a bird without wings.

A logo is the foundation on which an effective brand is built; it is the first step in the branding process and  it sets the tone for the rest of your marketing material. This includes selecting a colour palette, iconography, typography and the overall “feel” associated with your brand.

TIP: A Logo should be legible at any size, whether it is beaming from a 40 ft billboard or quietly sitting at the bottom of a business card. So make sure to review your logo at sizes ranging from small to large, this will save you major headaches down the road.

2. Business Cards

You don’t get an opportunity to make a great first impression twice.

Have you ever received a business card and thought “Wow, this is really cool”? Of course you have, we all have, and I’ll bet your first impression was that the person who gave you the card was serious about their business. Conversely, have you ever received a business card that looked like it had been printed on a home printer? Ya so have I, and I’ll bet your first impression was that the person wasn’t serious about their business.

A well designed business card does a lot of the talking for you, it is an excellent ice breaker and it positions you as a serious professional.

3. Website

A website is the most effective way to market your business.

Newspaper advertising is in serious decline, and Yellow Pages advertising will soon be toast. So what will replace these titans of traditional advertising? The latest trends on Canada’s internet usage show an increase of 106.5% over the last 10 years, and there is no end in sight.

Websites are an amazing way to connect with customers in an informal way. People can review a business, its services, and information all from the comfort of their home. The web has also created a platform for consumers to share information about products and services they find valuable.

The latest stats suggest that about 80% of consumers are researching products or services online prior to making a purchase. If this trends hold true, your business cannot afford to be left out of the conversation.

4. Facebook Page

If you haven’t heard of Facebook you’ve been living under a rock for the last six years.

Facebook is the most popular social networking website in the world, and it currently has over 500 million active users! Many business are nervous about creating a Facebook page because there is limited control over who, and what users post. Although these are legitimate concerns the benefits far outweigh the negatives. Facebook enables businesses to connect with prospective clients in an informal, relaxed environment. These connections strengthen brand messages and keeps your business top of mind.

Let me just repeat one point again; Facebook has 500 MILLION users! That’s 500 million reasons to develop a business page today.

5. Newsletter

Paper newsletters may be a thing of the past but digital newsletters are just starting to come into their own.

Digital newsletters share the same benefits as other online marketing techniques, they are inexpensive, environmentally friendly, and they provide statistical data on visitors. A newsletter can be custom designed to match your branding and distributed for as low as 1 cent per contact.

Also, newsletters can be integrated into a customer relations management tool, which automatically sends information to prospective clients, taking the guess work out of managing leads.

6. Letterhead

We are not a paperless society quite yet, so the need for a professionally designed letterhead is as important today as ever.

A professional letterhead can be used for a variety of different applications, once again strengthening your brand. Common uses are invoices, testimonials, thank you letters, press releases, and quotes.

7. Envelope

An envelope is an envelope, they haven’t changed much in over a two hundred years, however, they are still important in creating a branded experience.

Adding a logo to an envelope once again strengthens your brand, it positions you as a serious, professional business, and it allows you to reinforce your messaging.

8. Brochure

Brochures are a great presentation tool and act as a snap-shot of your business.

Brochures can be used to outline your services, products, experience, and highlight testimonials. They can be valuable at trade shows, when giving presentations, or as a leave behind at an event. Much of marketing is about building relationships, and brochures can be a quick and easy way to provide new contacts with information on your business.

9. Presentation Folder

Whether your business consists of B to B or B to C, you will most likely need a presentation folder.

Presentation Folders are great, they allow you to stuff all kinds of informational material into a neat package. One of the most popular uses of a presentation folder is to stuff it with client specific one sheets. One sheets are simple informational sheets that can be printed on a home printer saving you time and money. This allows you to customize your packages based on the clients needs.

10. PowerPoint Presentation

There will come a time in your business career that you will need to give a formal presentation. It may be to a prospective client, internally to your staff, or at a networking group or conference. Bottom line is to be prepared, and have the tools you need to succeed.

PowerPoint is still the most popular presentation tool available today because of its easy to use interface and functionality. However, the default templates leave something to be desired. Once again a professionally designed PowerPoint template reinforces your brand, and presents you as a serious professional.

Conclusion:

So that is my list of 10 Marketing Pieces All Should Have. In conclusion I’d like to leave you with something to chew on; whether it’s online marketing or traditional advertising one fact reins true, if you don’t market to your customers someone else will.

Search Engine Optimization is the process of increasing a website’s PageRank within popular search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing. SEO is a good idea for any business, large or small, because it allows you to drive traffic to your website via organic search results.

There are two factors that determine a website’s SEO, those factors are Relevance and Importance. Relevance is exactly what you would assume, if my search query is “Calgary Flower Shop” you can bet I’m not searching for used tires. Therefore, ensuring the content on your website is Relevant to the most popular search queries increases your website’s chances of ranking for popular keywords.

A website’s Importance is similar to a high school SRC election, the most popular person (or in this case website) will win every time. But unlike a high school election, popularity on the web is determined by links not votes. In short, the more websites that link to you, the more popular you are (and you thought high school antics were far behind you).

2. Search Engine Marketing

Search Engine Marketing is the use of paid “sponsour” links to promote your business in Google. Have you ever noticed the links that flow down the right hand side of the Google search results? They aren’t “organic search results” as you see in SEO, they are actually paid links using Google’s advertising platform Adwords.

Adwords is an effective way to market your business for multiple reasons. The first is that it takes time, money and serious effort to have your website displayed on the home page for high ranking keywords such as “Calgary Realtor”, “Calgary Insurance”, “Calgary… (insert industry here)”. However, with the use of Adwords campaigns you can guarantee that your business will appear on the home page for your selected keywords. Adwords campaigns are also relatively inexpensive. The ads feature a headline, and two lines of text… that’s it! So the fees associated with the design and production of newspaper, radio, or television campaigns disappear! However, the most beneficial feature of SEM is the ability to precisely track the success of your campaign. Adwords campaigns can be integrated into Analytics programs providing you with statistical information on your visitors and their actions.

In short, no other traditional advertising medium has tracking metrics that come anywhere near SEM campaigns.

3. Newsletter Distribution Systems

For most of you that are reading this post you’ve been directed to it via my newsletter, so I don’t have to explain that Newsletter Distribution Systems work. However, I would like to explain how a newsletter can benefit a business in multiple ways.

For starters newsletters are an environmentally friendly solution for marketing your business. I don’t mean to play the “Green Card” but environmental sustainability should, at the very least, be a small consideration in running your business. Secondly, newsletters are an inexpensive way to advertise because there are no printing fees involved. Today the fees associated with the design, development, and distribution of a direct mail piece is more than quadruple the price of a digital newsletter. That’s a potential saving of $1,000 – $3,000! Lastly, as I’ve mentioned before, online marketing’s biggest strength is its ability to track and measure campaigns, and newsletters are no exception. Newsletter distribution systems provide data regarding who received the newsletter, who opened it, who clicked internal links, and much, much more.

4. Social Network Marketing

Some people are very skeptical of Social Network Marketing, calling it a fad, or ignoring it all together because of the lack of control regarding what people post, tag, or comment. And while these are valid concerns, I strongly believe that the benefits far out-weigh the risks.

As an introduction to Social Network Marketing I should first define what it is. SNM is the process of leveraging personal relationships with friends, co-workers, contacts and family members in an effort to grow your business. Now that may sound nefarious but it shouldn’t; social networking at its root level is about communicating with people who share common interests. Therefore, informing people about your career or business is no different than sharing information on your Thanks Giving dinner, new nephew, or crazy weekend in Las Vegas. Social Network Marketing works because people care about people and people want their friends to succeed. That is why I believe SNM should be focused on sharing information and communicating in an informal manner.

This isn’t restricted to Facebook, as SNM campaigns are designed to leverage contacts within Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and LinkedIn.

5. Tracking & Analytics Software

I’ve alluded to tracking software throughout this blog, and although it isn’t exactly an online marketing technique, I would still like to expand on its value. Tracking & Analytics Software comes in a variety of different flavours. There are analytics programs developed specifically for passing sales leads; there are analytics programs designed specifically for tracking visitors and their actions on a website; and there are analytics programs designed specifically for tracking the success of Social Network Marketing campaigns.

Being 24 myself, I can related to the hardships experienced in the professional world by young artists trying to make a name for themselves. Cody Wheeler

Cody Wheeler is currently completing a Bachelor of Applied Arts degree in Medicine Hat. A relatively new photographer, Wheeler has  only have been shooting for about a year.

“I get a lot of inspiration from music videos from the 90s. On the flip-side of that, I also get a lot of inspiration from classic cinema. I am just really passionate about photography, and if I’m not doing it, I’m reading about it, or looking at it.”

Keith Skrastins

Keith Skrastins is a man that’s not afraid to get his hands dirty. He has been roaming indie rock night clubs for years, armed only with his camera and a half empty pack of cigarettes.

A self-taught photographer, Skrastins has become one of the most influential pieces of the Calgary indie rock scene. He has shot some of Calgary’s most prolific bands including: The Lions, The Nix Dicksons, Frankie McQueen, Noel Johnson, Matt Blais, Black Phoenix Orchestra, and many, many more.

We’ve all seen the final version of cool band posters hanging in our favourite pub or bar but very few people outside of the design community have had the opportunity to see the whole process and layers of a band poster. Below are the steps I took to design my latest poster for The Nix Dicksons and Frankie McQueen show on June 19, 2010.

For this poster my creative direction was as follows: tropical theme, feature Zharu the Volcano God, the three bands, sponsors logos, and brief “when” and “where” info.

Step 1

With all of my projects I start with a blank sheet of paper. This is definitely the most intimidating and exciting part of designing anything. I slowly collect my thoughts and envision what I would like to create.

Step 2

Once I have a defined image in my mind I start from the bottom layer and work my way up. For this particular poster I needed to use tropical elements to stay on theme. I found an excellent royalty free image on www.sxc.hu, of a bamboo curtain, it looked like a good starting place so I got to work. You’ll notice that the image has a weird splotchy texture to it, that’s no accident. I applied a filter known as Artistic Cutout, it turns a full colour image into an image with a specified amount of colours, for this piece I used 8.  The Artistic Cutout filter eliminates most of the depth in the image, which is great because as a background image i didn’t want it to be to overpowering.

Step 3

The texture used in step two was great for creating an attractive background but it won’t work so well for displaying content. Therefore, in the next step my goal was to create a defined content area. I took a grungy piece of paper and applied the same Photoshop filter Artistic Cutout. The filter once again reduced the complexity of the image and matched up nicely with the background.

Step 4

Step 4 is very subtle but extremely important to the overall look of the poster. What I’ve done is set my foreground colour to orange then apply what is called a “blending mode” to the solid colour. The blending mode I used is called Overlay. Overlay multiplies or screens the colors, depending on the base color. Basically the entire image ends up with the same, consistent colour tones.

Step 5

This was a crucial point in the poster design because to be completely honest I was stuck! I had tried incorporating the typography over the grungy paper texture and it looked awful. Then a spark of inspiration, “why not use a word bubble… gunge style”! And that is exactly what I did, if you can notice there are actually three different layers to the word bubble. The background layers are once again set to Overlay to give that cool colour blend and since no content would be directly over those two layers I could get away with it. The dark brown bubble, however, had to be solid so that the typography would be legible and easy to read, so there was no Overlay fun there.

Step 6

Step 6 was really fun for me because I got to incorporate Zharu The Volcano God! I’d like to take credit for the cool tiki illustration but my heart of hearts will not allow it. As in most cases when you see a really cool illustration, it was purchased from a third party stock photography website (in this case www.fotolia.com).

This step may seem out of order with step 5. Why did I decided to create a word bubble content area before I found the image of Zharu… good question. A lot of times with my design I have a vision for what I want, and I just adapt to what the creative universe provides, this time it worked but other times it has failed miserably.

Step 7

Next we tackle the typography. As you can see in this step the poster is really starting to come to life. I had played around with all types of fonts, thin ones, thick ones, tiki fonts, and Hawaiian font but nothing was working. Then I tried a seldom used font in my arsenal, it is a font called Capture It. It reminded me of the fonts you would see spray-painted on the side of wooden cargo boxes, kinda grungy but still extremely legible. Although it wasn’t exactly on theme it just seemed to fit for some reason, plus it is bold enough to be seen by your grandma without her bi-focals at 20 yards.

One piece of advice I would like to give about typography for band posters is this, nothing else is as important as prominently featuring the band names! Having a cool poster is great but it no one can read the band names then your entire poster design has just gone down the drain.

Step 8

We are getting really close now. In this step we add the supporting content and the sponsors logos. My thinking in designing band posters is this, a person will see the bands who are playing, if they are interested they will take an extra step forward to see when and where the show is. Therefore, i usually make this info smaller then the band names.

Once the supporting content is in place I add the sponsors logos. I hate adding sponsor logos to posters, the colours are always off, they usually sit awkwardly at the bottom of the page or are hidden away in a lonely corner. However, the sponsors are usually the ones who pay me… did I mention I love sponsor logos!

Step 9

Well this is the last step, adding the final touches. A great artist once said, a painting isn’t finished until you cannot add or subtract anything from it. It’s amazing how true that statement is because although I thought I had completed this piece something just seemed to be missing. I an online search for some really cool palm trees and these are what I came up with. I Overlaid a fee trees behind Zharu, and on the background to create another dimension to the poster. And last but not least I included a few palm trees on Frankie McQueen’s name as a final touch. Voila!

So that is how I created the infamous Nix Dickson and Frankie McQueen poster. I really hope I didn’t mislead anyone into thinking this was a tutorial as it most certainly was not. Anyway thanks for reading my blog, and check back with me soon.

The Pale Blue Dot:

The Pale Blue Dot is a photograph of Earth taken in 1990 by Voyager 1 from a record distance of 6.1 billion kilometres (3.7 billion miles). The image illustrates the insignificance of Earth against the overwhelming vastness of space.

Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein Castle is a 19th-century Romanesque Revival palace on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany.

Man On The Moon

This is one of the most icon images of all tme, Buzz Aldrin poses on the Moon as Neil Armstrong captures his own reflection in the visor.

Sharkwater

This image was taken by Rob Stewart, director of Sharkwater, a documentary about the declining population of shark populations all over the world. The message behind the film is very somber but the imagery is breath taking.

Digital Blasphemy

This image was created by Ryan Bliss of Digital Blasphemy. Digital Blasphemy offers some of the most stunning desktop backgrounds you can find online. This particular image graced my desktop for almost two years while I was a student at the Lethbridge College.

Child & Vulture

This is the most disturbing photo in my list, however, it is extremely powerful. The small staving child is slowly crawling towards a feeding centre as the vulture patiently waits for her to die. The photographer Kevin Carter snapped this photo in 1993 in Sudan. The experience had a severe impact on Carter, and three months after this photo was taken he committed suicide.

Earthrise

A photograph of the Earth taken by astronaut William Anders in 1968 during the Apollo 8 mission. It has been called “the most influential environmental photograph ever taken.

Guerrillero Heroico

Guerrillero Heroico is an iconic photo of Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara taken by Alberto Korda on March 5, 1960, in Havana, Cuba. It is the most reprinted image in the history of photography. Interestingly, Alberto Korda claimed no payment for his picture. A modified version of the portrait through the decades was also reproduced on a range of different media, though Korda never asked for royalties.

Hubble Deep Field

The Hubble Deep Field is an image of a small region in the constellation Ursa Major, constructed from a series of observations by the Hubble Space Telescope. What is interesting about this photograph is that the area was thought to be empty but after a ten day exposure this image appeared. The HDF displayed over 10,000 points of light, each point being an entire galaxy containing billion of stars.

The Clash – London Calling

The photograph of Paul Simonon smashing his Fender Precision Bass at The Palladium in New York City on 21 September 1979 is one of the most icon images in rock and roll. Pennie Smith, who photographed the band for the album, originally did not want the photograph to be used. She thought that it was too out of focus, but Strummer and graphic designer Ray Lowry thought it would make a good album cover. In 2002, Smith’s photograph was named the best rock and roll photograph of all time by Q magazine^.

LastFM

LastFM has several different functions. It has the ability to ‘Scrobble’, where you download a program to your computer and it collects data on what you are listening to, and in dating site fashion, it establishes types of music listeners and you can view your music compatibility with other people. You can also use the application as a radio where it creates a playlist based on tags you input.

All in all, LastFM is a great way to learn of other artists and see your music tastes compared to your friends and others. The ability to love and hate tracks is great, but I did find the LastFM player would loop and replay songs.

Grooveshark

My favourite thing about Grooveshark is the ability to create multiple playlists – like the way you can in iTunes. I use Grooveshark quite often and the majority of the links to tracks work. Its online based, so it doesn’t have the same options as LastFM – but LastFM feels much more community focused, than for purely listening purposes.

blipFM

blipFM lets you become an online DJ. My first impression was that it was essentially a Twitter for music lovers. You’re awarded badges based on criteria about what you play, who likes what you’re playing, and several others. Props are the currency of blipFM – you get props for playing stuff people like and you give props if other play stuff you like.

The ability to give people ‘props’ based on what their playing and add them as a DJ to your music mix are the best things going for blipFM. It has a great community and its members are excellent.

Conclusion

1. Google Keyword Tool

Google to the rescue once again. Google has a keyword generation tool which you can access here (Google Keyword Tool). By searching keywords related to your business you are able to retrieve a number of related keywords. For this example I typed in “Web Design” and I received a result that looked something like this.

This search identifies the most searched keywords within my industry, giving me a solid foundation from which to start making my keyword list. By clicking the “Add’ button on the right side of the interface you are able to compile a list of keywords to use later.

Before we leave this interface I’d like to talk about a few other parameters you can search relating to keywords.

You are also able to filter the results to show:

Show Estimated Ad Position

Show Estimated Avg. Cost Per Click

Show Search Volume Trends

Show Highest Volume Occurred In

This information will further strengthen your list of keywords, providing you with quantitative data. This is truly the start of building a successful online advertising campaign.

2. Competitive Analysis

So you have a started a list of keywords, now what? Well the next step is seeing what your competition are up to. By typing your keywords into a search engine like Google you can find out which companies rank the highest. Websites that control the first, second, or third positions in any search results usually have a few things going for them like high ranking back links, and excellent meta data. The great thing is, is that you can view what keywords and meta data information they are using, and you can apply it to your newly formed list.

So once again I’ve search web design, and this is what displayed:

I’ve got some steep competition to say the least, but let’s take a look at what these websites are using for keywords, and find a way to capitalize on what is working for them. Usually the first three results will give you a sufficient keyword sample to draw from.

Once you are on your competitors website you need to view the source code. To do that, click “View” in your browser, from the drop down list select “View Source”. A plain text window will open that looks like this:

The information highlighted in yellow is what we are after, the keyword meta data, and the description meta data. So from this quick review of my competition I know that this particular web design company is using the following keywords:

Calgary web design, web design Calgary, Calgary web designers, Calgary website promotion, Calgary web company, Calgary web companies, Alberta web design, Alberta web designers, web designers in Calgary, Calgary web designers, website design, website promotion, Calgary web design specialists

From this info I can further strengthen my keyword list.

3. I’ve Made My Keyword List, Now What?

This is where online marketing becomes fun. You now get to fine-tune your website with the keyword list you’ve created. You will want to start by adding your keyword list to the meta data information on your site (this includes the title tags, keyword meta data and description meta data). This will help search engines properly index your website, and because you’ve created such a solid list of keywords based on quantitative information, you know they will be successful.

We aren’t done quite yet. Keywords should also be scattered throughout the content on your website. Don’t overdue it but use the keywords as consistently as possible without degrading the readability of your content. Keywords used on your site should also be bolded, italicized, or linked to other sections of your website. Giving more weight to keywords tells the search engines that this is important information to your website, and you will be ranked more highly because of it.

4. Google Adwords

Creating a Google Adwords campaign is all about knowing which keywords will be the most successful. Although I won’t go into detail about how to create an Adwords campaign in this post, I would like to mention a few key points.

Google will compare the keywords you have in your Adwords ads, against the content you have on your landing page. So if your ad reads something like this “Calgary Website Design – Calgary’s premier source for website design and development” and the same keywords are located on your landing page, Google will give your ad a more positive ranking. There are other factors that come into play when creating Adwords campaigns, such as CPC (Cost-Per-Click) but every little bit of optimization helps.

5. Conclusion

There are many other ways to optimize your keywords to improve your SEO, however, this is an excellent starting point for any company interested in building a successful keyword list for their online marketing campaign.

Signing-up to these directories won’t cause your phone to ring off the hook with customers eager to hand over their money but signing up to these directories will make your information available to a much wider range of users.

So enough chitchat lets begin.

Google Places

Google is a great place to start because it is the largest of the search engines, controlling roughly 60% of the total search engine market. Google is also a world leader in “local search”, an emerging technology that calculates a user’s location; returning results for businesses in close proximity to the user.

To create a business listing within Google Places you first need to create a Gmail account. Once you have created your account you will be eligible to post your listing.

Canpages

Canpages is a Vancouver-based Canadian Directory. Canpages currently controls about 10% of the Canadian directory market share, generating roughly 3.5 million unique visitors per month.

Canpages will force you to do a telephone number search prior to listing your business. The search is required to avoid duplicate numbers being added to their system.

Craigslist

Craigslist is another company that provides free listings and a whole lot of exposure. Easier to use and search because of it’s no frills design, craigslist is an excellent way to promote, and sell business services.

One thing I should note about Craigslist, however, is that is does tend to get attacked by spammers. So posting your email address in your listing will bring an inbox full of unwanted emails. Sometimes it is a matter of taking the good with the bad.

Kijiji

Kijiji is classifieds website where users can post free ads on everything from slightly used 17” chrome rimes, to professional services. The provided link will get you a basic listing for free, however, prices for preferred placement, or linking to your website will cost you a few dollars.

Calgary Economic Development

Calgary Economic Development is Calgary’s business link. You can find info on your industry, news and events happening in the city, and submit your business listing to their extensive directory.

It’s difficult to determine the success rate of a directory such as this but the one golden rule stands strong, you can’t win if you don’t play.

Hot Frog

Hot Frog is a lesser-known online directory that generates about 1,500,000 page views per month. However, the online registration your free business listing is quick and easy.

Canada One

Canada One is an excellent resource for Canadian Business information. It also has one of the most pain-free directory sign-ups. This is one website I highly recommend you browse after adding your free listing.

Conclusion

So that’s my list! I’m sure a few of you are thinking to yourself, what about Yahoo, and Bing, I know they have business listings. The truth is that Canada is considered a foreign country even though we border the US, so much for continental brotherhood. However, in a few short years, as local search continues to grow, I’m confident that businesses will be able to register online to all of the major search engines.

The Olympic medals, designed by Omar Arbel and Corrine Hunt, are stunning. The unique undulating surfaces are representative of the rolling landscape of the greater Vancouver area while the laser engraved west coast aboriginal artwork is a tribute to Canadian culture.

The design of the medals went through a number of phases, starting out as a locket, but eventually landing on the extraordinary design we now see. Below are a few preliminary designs on the medals and the final versions. Enjoy!

Anyone who is zombie movie fanatic like myself will truly appreciate the cheesy gore, special effects and “zombie kills of the week.” However, Zombieland incorporates one feature all but ignored by the movie industry; dynamic, animated, absolutely kick-ass titles.

Below are a few screen shots from the film trailer (also in the film). Although it is impossible to do them justice in image-flats I figured it was still worth recommending.

Zombieland opened Friday, October 2 but I’m sure we’ll be hearing about it for years to come.
